Problems occur, unforeseen meetings, but these are part of the life of the area and the staff deal with each situation carefully. On a day-to-day basis at the Guesthouse, many local older residents stop by for the (free to everybody) cold or hot tea, the staff know these residents well and try to use “voice, words and heart” to make them feel welcome and have conversations – or simply let them quietly enjoy the relaxing space. (An article for more background to Nishinari-ku /japan/nishinari/) As a guest in the Cocoroom guesthouse you will be ideally positioned to learn about and interact with this area and a side of Japan you may never have experienced before. From personal experience, there are few, if any, other places in Japan with this same atmosphere. Very cheap hotels, supermarkets, karaoke shops, bars and other businesses cater to this population, giving Nishinari-ku a unique atmosphere. This is aside from a large homeless population. Many other people from around Japan who feel nowhere else to go turn up in Nishinari-ku (or “Kamagasaki”). This area has been the cheap base for many day labourers (cash-in-hand, unstable work) for decades, but now they are elderly, with little work left, and very few, if any, family or other social connections. Nishinari-ku has an infamous reputation with Japanese people as a “dangerous” area – potentially due to the media attention given to previous local riots. This approach is used by everyone to listen, understand and connect with the locals around them and the people passing through. “Voice, Words and Heart” is the (translated) motto of Cocoroom. While at the same time hosting Japanese and international guests to its guesthouse and regular events. In Japan’s largest day-labourer neighbourhood (Nishinari-ku, Osaka), home to many famous uprisings of the ignored and isolated ex-day labourers, Cocoroom works with locals using creativity and a sincere attitude. Through an ethnographic history of the nonprofit arts space Cocoroom, I contribute to the anthropology of gentrification by focusing on entrepreneurial forms of creativity in local arts organizations, which reveal historical transformations of public space in Japanese urban policy, and highlight the symbolic performances of marginal communities.Local community space and outreach, welcoming and creative international guesthouse/cafe, experimental events, free universityĢ-3-3 Taishi, Nishinari-ku, Osaka-shi, Osaka 557-0002 In this paper, I focus on a working-class district of South Osaka known as Kamagasaki, infamous for its longstanding population of day laborers and homeless, in which gentrification has taken a complex route through various projects of cultural representation. Gentrification is recognizable across contemporary urban societies, but its practices are contingent on representations of local cultural expression, which have particular ramifications in postindustrial centers of urban Japan. In contemporary Japanese cities, nonprofit and grassroots arts organizations are mobilized in threatened urban neighborhoods, where neoliberal forms of creativity are invoked to mitigate social and economic displacement.
